The Kootenay Lake BC Family Day Fishing Derby 2015 is CANCELLED due to an extreme decline in fish stock.
As many of you know for the last two years fishing on Kootenay Lake seems to be getting worse or, at least, definitely not any better. After much discussion we, as concerned anglers ourselves, have had to make the very difficult decision to postpone the Kootenay Lake BC Family Day Fishing Derby 2015 until 2016. Please rest assured that your places are still held in the order we received them in 2014.
This derby was intended to be a fun and exciting event and many of you can attest that spending two and half days on Kootenay Lake at minus 10 degrees without a bite or catching 1 to 2 pound rainbow is not fun or exciting. In fact, one of the 2014 fall 3-day derbies did not measure any fish and the prizes had to be randomly drawn. This is not a situation that we want our participants to find themselves in. As well, a lot of anglers from B.C, Alberta, and all over the Western States have to travel dangerous winter roads to get to the derby.
We understand that Fisheries will be posting a document explaining the reasons for the decline and will have a link on this website as soon as it’s published.
Hopefully the conditions will improve and we will be back next year.
